interesting translation

was doing my Japanese homework when i came across a unfamiliar word: 独身(do-ku-shi-n).

when i went to babelfish to translate the word, i got "celibacy".

I've got a rough idea what this means, but it didn't fit the context of my Japanese homework question. thus i went on to dictionary.com to confirm my understanding of the word.

cel·i·ba·cy [sel-uh-buh-see] –noun
  1. abstention from sexual relations.
  2. abstention by vow from marriage: the celibacy of priests.
  3. the state of being unmarried.

if i take the first definition, my Japanese homework will ask:
"how many male virgins are there in your Japanese class?"

very interesting indeed. doesn't seem like an appropriate question to ask your classmates...
